The Benefits of Early Orthodontics

October 23rd, 2015 by Utah Orthodontic Care

At Utah Orthodontic Care, we’re constantly striving to provide our patients with the best orthodontic care possible. While many of our patients are teenagers preparing their smile for adulthood or adults looking to reinvigorate their professional and personal lives, orthodontic care can also have many benefits for children. For this blog, we’re going to discuss some of the advantages of early orthodontic care.

An Early Start Towards a Beautiful Smile

Early orthodontics, also referred to as interceptive or Phase I treatment, is the use of braces, or any other orthodontic treatment on children between the ages of 7 and 10. While not every patient is suited for it, for those who do need it, it can provide a wide range of benefits. Here are some of the things that Phase I treatment can do to improve a patient’s smile:

Stopping Problems in their Tracks:

This is one of the most common reasons for interceptive treatment. By starting early, we can identify and treat problems early on, stopping what would be very serious conditions before they have time to develop. This can often save time and money, helping to minimize how long a patient needs braces overall.

Monitoring Development:

Along with the American Association of Orthodontists, we recommend that children first come to see us at age 7 – this lets us see what problems currently exist or may develop. By starting examinations early, we can monitor a child’s dental development over time and plan the ideal time to start treatment.

Crafting a Lifelong Smile:

Phase I treatment can help us plan a perfect smile in the long term. By treating a child in two phases, we can craft a healthy, beautiful smile that will last them the rest of their lives.
