Win Free Braces – 2017 Viral Commercial Contest

April 1st, 2017 by Utah Orthodontic Care

Would you like to win FREE Braces? Are you an aspiring screenwriter, filmmaker, or actor? Spend hours clicking through viral YouTube videos? Or do you just have a GoPro you’ve been looking for an excuse to use? Well, Utah Orthodontic Care is launching a new contest – and this might just be your moment to shine!

We’re opening up a Viral Commercial Contest for UOC, and we’re calling all filmmakers, actors, comedians, artists, or anybody with a camera phone to participate. It’s a simple contest, it’s open to anyone, and you’ve got the chance to win some pretty big prizes including free braces. Sound like something you’re interested in? Read on for the details!

About the Contest

Overall, then contest is simple: make a commercial (and we use that term loosely) for Utah Orthodontic Care that you think could go viral. You have to include our logo and you have to mention “Utah Orthodontic Care” at least once in the commercial – but you can include both of those things however you see fit, and you’re free to be as creative as you like in every other respect. Once you’ve made your video, you’ll simply upload it to YouTube or Vimeo, enter the URL in our Contest Form, and spread it far and wide! The video with the most votes wins.

This contest really is free range – whether it’s the world’s greatest Mannequin Challenge video, the sweetest story we’ve ever heard, or something that has us clutching our sides laughing, it’s up to you!

Ok, we know what’s next on your mind: what’s at stake? Well, we’re giving away some pretty awesome prizes for this contest, and three lucky winners will walk away very happy:

First prize? Free braces!

free braces

The first prize winner will receive free braces for one person at any one of our Wasatch Front offices. If you’ve already had braces, you can give them to a family member or donate them to a non-profit organization.

Second prize? A brand new GoPro Hero Session action camera – so don’t worry, you can make a LOT more viral videos. And finally, third prize is a free teeth whitening treatment at any of our Wasatch Front offices.

Interested? Here’s the fine print.

Contest Rules

The rules are fairly simple, and most of them are formalities. Here’s everything you need to know to enter and compete in the contest:

  • Your video can’t be longer than 2 minutes, and it must show the UOC logo and mention “Utah Orthodontic Care” at least once.
  • The winner of the contest will be determined after three (3) rounds of voting. The top videos at the end of the 1st round will advance to 2nd round. The top 10 will advance to the final round.
  • We’ll accept submission starting April 1, 2017.  Submissions will be accepted until July 31, 2017, but the first round of voting will end July 31, 2017 – so the sooner you submit, the more time you have to get votes.
  • The top videos from the first round will enter round two. Voting will continue on round 2 until September 30, 2017.
  • Before moving on to round 2, the top entries must email a copy of their commercial to Utah Orthodontic Care or upload the file to our DropBox account. If you are in the top entries, you will be notified by email to send your video file.
  • The top videos from round two will enter the final round. Voting will end on the final round October 31, 2017.
  • We’ll announce the winners by November 7, 2017, and we’ll notify them via email.
  • By entering this contest you give Utah Orthodontic Care permission to use your video submission in promotions, social media, television, or for any advertising purposes. You also give permission for Utah Orthodontic Care to edit submissions before such use.
  • Winner of free braces (or whomever uses the prize if it is given away) agrees to allow UOC to take before, during and after photos and videos to demonstrate the progress of treatment.  Claimant further authorizes UOC to use photos and videos for promotional purposes.
  • Winner of GoPro Hero Session agrees to come to our West Jordan office to claim their prize and agrees to be photographed for promotional purposes.
  • Winner of Teeth Whitening can claim prize at any one of our Wasatch Front offices and agrees to be photographed before and after treatment for promotional purposes.
  • Employees of Utah Orthodontic Care and their families are not eligible.
  • Utah Orthodontic Care reserves the right to reject any entry for any reason including but not limited to inappropriate content, length of video, missing required elements, or eligibility of contestant.

If you have any questions, we’re always happy to answer them – just give us a call at 801.999.4431 or reach out to us at our contact page.

Ready, Set, Film!

Ok – you know the rules, you know the stakes, and you know what to do. So get out there and get creative! We’re not just looking for the average dental commercial here – we want you to express your creativity and taste as a video maker. Feel free to push boundaries (within the realm of decency), lean on popular humor, or do something so creative no one else could have thought of it! Here are a few of our favorite viral videos, just to give some inspiration:

Keep in mind that you don’t have to be a film making genius with a $3,000 camera to win – these videos have millions of views and were probably made with phone cameras. Sometimes, a quick, funny movie made with an iPhone camera beats what comes out of Hollywood.

So no matter who you are, what you’ve got, or where you’re coming from, get out there and get filming!

How to Protect Your Toothbrush from Germs During Flu Season

January 26th, 2017 by Utah Orthodontic Care

Flu season is in full force, and one of the ways you’re most vulnerable to infection might be something you’re not even thinking about protecting: your toothbrush! While a toothbrush is still your most valuable ally in keeping your teeth clean and healthy, it’s also a magnet for microbes: those bristles are the perfect environment for bacteria, viruses, and other microbes to grow and multiply. Thankfully, there are things you can do to help protect your toothbrush this flu season.

Protecting Your Toothbrush from Germs & Bacteria

  • Wash the Brush: This one’s a no-brainer – always give your brush head a thorough rinse before putting it in your mouth.
  • Find an Anti-Germ Toothpaste: Look for fluoride toothpaste with triclosan/copolymer, as these are better at killing germs.
  • Replace Your Brush: You should replace your brush every 3 to 4 months. This is important not just for ensuring your brushing is effective, but it also gives you a clean slate on germs.
  • Close the Lid: This may be gross, but always close the lid when you flush the toilet. Otherwise, aerial spray can be a problem – and you do NOT want that on your toothbrush.
  • Let It Dry: While it may be your first instinct, don’t keep the brush in an airtight container. Store it where it has enough circulation to dry out between brushings, as this helps prevent bacterial growth.

With the flu in full force this season, it’s more important than ever to protect your brush from bacteria, viruses, and other germs. If you have more questions on how to keep your brush and teeth clean or want to come by for an appointment, we’d love to hear from you. Feel free to call us at 801.999.4431, reach out to us at our contact page, or use our easy online form to schedule an appointment at one of our offices. We can’t wait to hear from you, and we wish you luck keeping your brush clean!

Hygiene Tips for Braces

December 26th, 2016 by Utah Orthodontic Care

Oral hygiene is critical to the health of your teeth, and it gets even more important during treatment with braces. All those brackets, wires, and tight spaces provide the ideal place for food, bacteria, and plaque to hide, making it doubly important that you take good care of your teeth while you’re wearing braces. Thankfully, that’s not too hard. Follow these tips to help keep your teeth clean and your treatment on track!

Watch Your Diet

Believe it or not, diet is a big part of oral hygiene – and that’s doubly true with braces. You’ll need to avoid any foods that are hard, sticky, or chock full of sugar. Hard and sticky foods can break brackets and get stuck in archwires, while sugary foods rot away tooth enamel and cause cavities. Maintaining a healthy, braces-safe diet is the first step of oral hygiene during treatment.

Brush & Floss Incessantly

While you’re wearing braces, the standard twice-a-day routine doesn’t quite cut it. Instead, you should be brushing a minimum of four times per day: once after every meal and once before bed. On top of that, you should floss daily, and don’t be afraid to use tools like an interdental brush for spot cleaning throughout the day.

Use Mouthwash

To help safeguard your smile, mouthwash is a great supplement to your orthodontic treatment. Using a hydrogen peroxide based mouthwash twice per day will not only help to kill plaque and bacteria in your mouth, but will also soothe the minor cuts and scrapes you get from braces – keeping you more comfortable and your teeth healthier.

We hope you’ve found these tips helpful, and if you have any more questions on how to keep your teeth healthy during treatment, we’d love to help. Feel free to call us at 801.999.4431, reach out to us at our contact page, or use our easy online form to schedule a free consultation at any one of our locations. We can’t wait to hear from you, and we’re excited to help you achieve the beautiful smile you deserve through orthodontic treatment!

National Orthodontic Health Month

October 1st, 2016 by Utah Orthodontic Care

October is here, and that means there’s plenty of reason to celebrate. The leaves are starting to show off their beautiful fall colors, pumpkin and spice are making their annual appearance as the dominant flavors, and Halloween is just around the corner. But there’s another reason to celebrate October that you might not have heard before: October is National Orthodontic Health Month! This is an important holiday that celebrates a worthy cause, and it’s why October is one of our favorite months here at Utah Orthodontic Care.

The Importance of a Straight Smile

National Orthodontic Health Month is all about spreading awareness of the benefits and importance of orthodontic treatment – a cause we strongly believe in! Orthodontic treatment straightens your teeth and improves your smile, and while the aesthetic benefits are obvious, they’re far from the only good things about orthodontic treatment. Straight teeth are easier to keep clean, which means that correcting your smile helps to stave off tooth decay from cavities and bacteria.

But even more importantly, orthodontic treatment is an investment in your best asset: your smile. A new smile brings a boost of self-esteem, confidence, and happiness that radiates through every area of your professional life, making everything from big presentations at work to neighborhood block parties easier. Truly, orthodontic treatment isn’t just about protecting your health or getting a new smile: it’s about creating a new you.

Schedule an Appointment Today!

We hope you’ll take this month to reflect on the importance of your smile, and if you’ve been considering pursuing orthodontic treatment, there’s never been a better time to get started. We provide a wide variety of orthodontic treatments, and while traditional braces are still the most popular form of treatment, we also offer alternatives like clear braces and Clear Correct aligners. If you’re interested in finding out how orthodontic treatment can remake your smile, please give us a call at 801.999.4431, reach out to us at our contact page, or request an appointment online at one of our offices. We can’t wait to hear from you!

Why Do Some People Have Crooked Teeth?

July 26th, 2016 by Utah Orthodontic Care

While some people are born with a naturally perfect smile, most need orthodontic care to achieve a healthy, straight smile. So why the disparity? How come two otherwise normal, healthy people can have such dramatically different orthodontic outcomes and need radically different types of treatment? Well, as it turns out, the problem comes down to our genetics.

An Evolutionary Conundrum

While humans are often considered the peak of evolution, it turns out, evolution wasn’t quite finished with us! Tracing the development of our ancestors in the Homo genus – species like Australopithecus and Homo habilis, and Homo erectus – shows a common trend in the evolution of our mouth: namely, that it’s been getting smaller. As the latest in the line of Homo species, our mouths are the smallest yet – but unfortunately, our teeth haven’t quite caught up.

In most normal adults, the jawline just isn’t big enough to support 32 fully-grown adult teeth, which is why most people need to have wisdom teeth removed – and why most people’s teeth grow in crooked, necessitating orthodontics. While some people get lucky with a beautiful smile off the bat, we can blame evolution for the fact that most of us will need orthodontic treatment.

Habitual Distortion

In addition to the physiological problems, our own habits can sometimes impede our development. While thumb sucking is adorable in infants, if it continues past age four, it can actually change the angle of the front teeth and create an open bite. The same thing can happen with tongue thrusting, which is when a child throws their tongue forward when they swallow. These habits may seem small, but if left uncorrected over a long period of time, they can alter the developmental trajectory of the teeth, creating a malocclusion (bad bite).

Truthfully, the only way to ensure a straight, healthy, beautiful smile is through orthodontic treatment – and that’s our specialty. We’ve helped countless patients of all ages throughout the greater Salt Lake area achieve a beautiful smile, and we’d be thrilled to do the same for you. Feel free to call us at 801.999.4431 or reach out to us at our contact page with any questions, or if you’d like to come in for an appointment, just request your free consultation using our easy online form. How Elastics Contribute to Your Orthodontic Treatment

July 26th, 2016 by Utah Orthodontic Care

The fundamentals of braces aren’t too difficult to understand: the archwire runs through the brackets, which are cemented to the teeth. The archwire wants to run straight, and it exerts a force on the brackets – and consequently on the teeth – that pulls them into a straighter, more perfect alignment to match the archwire. That all makes sense. But what on earth do elastics, or the rubber bands we attach to your braces, do? Are rubber bands really good for anything else than flinging at your friends or holding together bunches of asparagus?

Extra Control for Jaw Correction

As it turns out, they’re critically important to many people’s treatment! While brace are highly effective at straightening the teeth, this is all they’re really capable of: straightening the alignment of the teeth along each dental arch. What they aren’t capable of – at least on their own – is altering the alignment of the jaws themselves. This is where elastics come in.

By attaching elastics to brackets and running them from one dental arch to the other, we can actually exert force on the jaws themselves, causing them to change their alignment. This is what lets us treat conditions like severe overbite, underbite, and crossbite by moving the jaws and altering the relationship of the upper and lower jaw. For many patients, elastics are a vital part of treatment and ensuring a healthy, functional bite and smile.

We hope you’ve found this information helpful, and if you’d like to see elastics in action, we’d be thrilled to help. Orthodontic treatment is an investment in your best asset, and you’ll get to reap the rewards for years to come. Feel free to call us at 801.999.4431 or reach out to us at our contact page with any questions, or if you’d like to get started with your treatment, just request your free consultation today at any of our locations. Pepperoni Pizza Wrap

This healthy family favorite from the Food Network’s “Hungry Girl” will have all of your kids running for the dinner table.

  • 1 stick light string cheese
  • 1 medium-large high-fiber flour tortilla with about 110 calories
  • 2 tablespoons pizza sauce
  • Dash Italian seasoning
  • Dash garlic powder
  • Dash onion powder
  • 1/4 cup chopped spinach leaves
  • 1/4 cup canned stewed tomatoes, roughly chopped, patted dry
  • 1 teaspoon reduced-fat Parmesan-style grated topping
  • 6 pieces turkey pepperoni, chopped

  • Set toaster oven to highest setting.
  • Break string cheese into thirds and put in a blender or food processor-blend at high speed until cheese takes on a shredded or grated consistency. (Or just tear string cheese into pieces and roughly chop.) Set aside.
  • Place tortilla on a microwave-safe plate and microwave for 10 seconds, or until just warm. Evenly spread sauce onto the center of the tortilla, and sprinkle with a dash of each of the spices. Top with spinach, stewed tomatoes, Parm-style topping, chopped turkey pepperoni, and shredded/grated string cheese.
  • Wrap tortilla up like a burrito, folding the sides in first, and then rolling it up from the bottom. Place wrap on a microwave-safe plate, seam side down, and warm in the microwave for 30 seconds.
  • Transfer wrap to the toaster oven and cook until hot on the inside and slightly crisp on the outside, about 3 minutes. Dig in!

PER SERVING (entire recipe): 234 calories, 7.5g fat, 1,083mg sodium, 32g carbs, 7.5g fiber, 5.5g sugars, 16.5g protein

  • 1 cup (150 g) frozen strawberries,
  • 1 cup (150 g) frozen raspberries
